Treating OCD With Exposure + Response Prevention

Treating OCD With Exposure + Response Prevention

An interview with Dr. Sarah Schall :: The Neurodivergent Collective, Newport Beach, CA

How Perfectionism and OCD Debilitate Everyday Hobbies

I had an individual where we actually played a round of golf together. The reason was is that his perfectionism had completely obliterated his ability to engage in hobbies and he was an avid golfer, at one time. He’d get stuck setting up the uh tee off for like an hour. At a certain point just stop golfing altogether.

ERP: Breaking Compulsive Rituals and AI-Driven Rumination in Real Time

The way in which we started to do exposure therapy was think about golfing let’s go golfing without engaging in your compulsions of checking, reassurance seeking, he actually used AI a lot with ocd compulsions. So he would video himself golfing put it into AI, then get tips on how he was performing and then ruminate about them spent hours practicing in a debilitating way.

Rewiring the Brain: Resisting Compulsions and Reclaiming Joy

The exposure was we just went out and played golf as one would resisting compulsions. One I think we had fun, but two, it was a good exposure because it was bringing his hobbies to life and OCD had taken over them, right? We were able to play. He was able to resist compulsive behaviors. Why that’s so important, is because it’s aiding in the rewiring of the brain of I don’t have to engage in compulsive behaviors regardless of my intrusive thoughts. Homework then was for him to continue golfing and I’m happy to report that he is able to and continues to golf leisurely, enjoyably without compulsions at this point.
